Watch As a Pod Of Killer Whales Gang-Up & Attack Lone Sea lion
Most folks tend to believe that sharks (especially Great White Sharks) are the apex predators of the ocean. But there is one species that is more ferocious and aggressive and even feeds on Great Whites…the Orca. Orcas, or killer whales, are the largest of the dolphins and one of the world’s most powerful predators. They feast on marine mammals such as seals, sharks, sea lions, and even whales, employing teeth that can be four inches long.
They are known to grab seals right off the ice. They also eat fish, squid, and seabirds.Though they often frequent cold, coastal waters, orcas can be found from the polar regions to the Equator.
What we now know is that not all orcas prey on other cetaceans. Some populations specialize on fish, some on seals, some on sharks and rays, and some are generalists and eat many different things! We also know that they are complex, highly social, and have different cultures – orcas have their own civilization under the sea. Top predators, yes, but not the vicious “whale killers” that the ancient mariners thought them to be.
But when hungry, they hunt as a team (similar to lions in Africa) and then no other marine life (seal and even great white sharks) are safe from these awesome, highly intelligent predators. A sea lion is no small prey animal and if attacked, they can very readily defend themselves from most predators. But as you will see in the video below, orcas have a certain hunting strategy when it comes to sea lions.
