[Warning] This Graphic Video Of Piranhas Feeding Is Like Something Right Out Of The Addams Family

For those of you who are old enough to remember the old television show “The Addams Family”, one of the best scenes (for me at least), was Morticia Addams feeding her pet piranha fish. Of course, you never actually SAW the piranhas, only the bubbling water in the tank when she held the dead fish by the tail and pulled-out a skeleton when the fish were done feeding after a few frenzied seconds (just like in the old picture below).

I always thought is wasn’t real, but it was sure funny to watch. Well, the video below is absolutely real (and incredibly graphic too-boot). It’s actually a video compilation of several instances of these ferocious fish eating what is being thrown into the water by some South American villagers.

Piranha range in size from small to quite large and they tend to travel in schools, which makes them quite a threat to some careless animal, bird, or person.

When Theodore Roosevelt went on a hunting expedition in Brazil in 1913, he got his money’s worth. Standing on the bank of the Amazon River, he watched piranhas attack a cow with shocking ferocity. It was a classic scene: water boiling with frenzied piranhas and blood, and after about a minute or two, a skeleton floating to the suddenly calm surface. Roosevelt was horrified, and he wrote quite a bit about the vicious creatures in his 1914 book, “Through the Brazilian Wilderness.” He recounted the stories of townspeople who had been eaten alive, and others who’d lost body parts to piranhas while bathing in the river.
Piranhas have one of the strongest bites found in bony fishes. Relative to body mass, the black piranha produces one of the most forceful bites measured in vertebrates. This extremely powerful bite is generated by large jaw muscles that are attached closely to the tip of the jaw, conferring the piranha with a mechanical advantage that favors force production over bite speed. Strong jaws combined with finely serrated teeth make them adept at tearing flesh. Piranhas have a reputation as ferocious predators that hunt their prey in schools.
