In the video below, we see CMPD Officer Brian Walsh, fatally shooting Iaroslav Mosiiuk. Iaroslav is a Russian immigrant who suffered from a mental illness of some sort. Although the shooting happened in March 2017, a judge just allowed the video to be released.
The family has an attorney and is in the process of filing a wrongful death lawsuit. The District Attorney found no wrong doing by the officers on scene.
On March 08, 2017, at approximately 1:00 p.m., officers responded to Justice Avenue concerning a suicide threat call for service. Upon arrival, officers encountered Iaroslav Mosiiuk armed with a rifle.
Mr. Mosiiuk directly leveled the rifle toward officers when they knocked on his front door before he “exploded” in the direction of the officers. The officers retreated in an attempt to take cover for their safety. Mr. Mosiiuk ran in the direction of an officer on scene.
Officer Walsh observed Mr. Mosiiuk, whose back was turned to Officer Walsh at the time, pointing the gun at another officer. Officer Walsh then fired his service weapon and struck Mr. Mosiiuk in an attempt to stop the imminent threat.
