Here Are 10 Reasons Why The Spartans Were The Ultimate ‘Bad Asses’ Of The Ancient World
If you missed history class in Middle school, or High school and didn’t learn about the ancient Greek city state of Sparta, you truly missed-out on some exciting stuff. The Spartan army was renowned throughout the ancient world as the ‘ultimate bad asses’ of it’s day. Spartan soldiers were bred for one thing and one thing only- war. Unlike it neighbor and closest rival Athens, Sparta did not raise it’s men to be poets, painters, or philosophers, Sparta raised it’s men to be the fiercest warriors on the planet.
And Spartan women were raised for only one thing as well, to give birth to male children, so that they in turn would grow-up to warriors. In times of war, other Greek city states, called upon their population (when necessary) to fight, but afterwards, they would return to their chosen occupations. Sparta had one purpose and one purpose only and that was to be an entire nation of the fiercest warriors in the entire world.
Unlike the silly depiction in the comic book movie “300”, Spartan warriors did not go into battle half naked, the were covered from head to foot in bronze armor and carried a very heavy 30 pound shield made of wood and bronze. If you were a Spartan man and you were older than 50 years old…chances are, you were one bad-ass old man.
Sparta is one of the most extreme civilizations to have ever walked on the Earth. Relatively early in Greek history, even before the Classical World had begun, the Spartans drove through a radical social and political revolution. In effect, all Spartans are made to be equal; really equal. And they developed key concepts we still use in our military today, like the importance of self-sacrifice for the common good. The highest honor a Spartan warrior could achieve, was to die in battle for his country.
