U.S., Israel to announce military aid package
DRIVING THE DAY — U.S., ISRAEL TO ANNOUNCE $38 BILLION MILITARY AID DEAL: The Obama administration has finalized a $38 billion military aid agreement with Israel, which constitutes the “single largest pledge of bilateral military assistance in U.S. history,” the State Department announced Tuesday. The plan will cover a decade’s worth of aid, beginning in fiscal year 2019. The memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Israel will be made public today during a signing ceremony in the State Department’s Treaty Room.
Reuters reports that the $38 billion deal “also involves major concessions granted by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to officials on both sides. Those include Israel’s agreement not to seek additional funds from Congress beyond what will be guaranteed annually in the new package and also to phase out a special arrangement that has allowed Israel to spend part of its U.S. aid on its own defense industry instead of on American-made weapons, the officials said.”
