Video | How to Restore Cast Iron

Lewis and Clark documented that their cast iron Dutch Oven was their most useful piece of equipment on their journey. Any survival toolset should include at least a piece or two of cast iron as it is functional and long-lasting. Here is a video from the pro’s at Lodge Logic on how to properly restore cast iron.

A couple of personal notes: 1) I was once given a piece of old cast iron cookware that was extremely rusty. After placing it in my oven on the self-cleaning cycle, it removed all rust, dirt, seasoning, and everything else (made quite a dusty mess in the oven that was vacuumed out.) Once raw, I then proceeded to season it with oil and lard, similar to the method demonstrated in this video; 2) bacon grease may produce the best ever cast iron seasoning, so consider cooking breakfast soon after restoring your cast iron. Enjoy!
