Lone Lioness Attempts To Bring Down Hippo…BIG MISTAKE
The big question for me, is why on earth would a lone lioness attempt something like this in the first place? Usually, lions work as a team and all of the adults in the pride coordinate their attacks, so when I see something like this I have to wonder what was going through the mind of this particular lion. This incident took place at Maasai Mara National Reserve, in southwestern Kenya, along the Tanzanian border.
Its animals include lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras and hippos. Wildebeest traverse its plains during their annual migration. The landscape has grassy plains and rolling hills, and is crossed by the Mara and Talek rivers. The area nearby is dotted with villages of the Maasai people. When it was originally established in 1961 as a wildlife sanctuary the Mara covered only 520 square kilometers of the current area, including the Mara Triangle. The Maasai Mara National Reserve now covers some 1,510 kilometers in south-western Kenya. It is the northern-most section of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem, which covers some 25,000 kilometers in Tanzania and Kenya
The question remains though, why did a lone lion attack a full grown hippo? Either she decided to go out on her own (which isn’t very likely), or she was starving and threw caution to the wind , we may never know. Once thing is painfully obvious, I seriously doubt she will attempt anything so foolish as this in the near future. The lion was lucky to escape with her life.
